What is a Speedlight Mastery workshop?

This event is a down to earth creative session that will push you beyond your usual photographic comfort zone and bring you out the other side as a master of the Speedlight. The electric enthusiasm of Damien Lovegrove to steer the session and a great lunch at a waterfront restaurant are all included. This training day will aim to give you a collection of wonderful pictures lit masterfully with Speedlights.

New workshop; new opportunities.

"My Urban Portraits workshops have run their course over the past 4 years and now that radio TTL technology has arrived it's time to move on. The opportunities this new technology affords us is immense. Using three Speedlights to create dramatic and beautiful portraits is now easy. Knowing that they will all be triggered correctly gives us a new degree of freedom. 'So what' you may say, but the reality took me by surprise. I found myself using easy to rig silver umbrellas and soft boxes. Inexpensive kit that transforms pictures. I rigged backlights out of sight behind my models and the benefits don't end there. I have developed a completely new exposure system for 2010 that lets me stay in control of aperture; this is the key to my new way of working. I'm going to share this system with you as we create wonderful portraits lit with precision and ease. New locations, new opportunities and a new shooting method will ensure we are all able to stay ahead of the competition."

Workshop specification:

• Dedicated days for either Canon or Nikon users
• Bristol or Manchester events
• 1 tutor (Damien Lovegrove)
• 4 - 5 delegates
• 1 professional model

What you will learn:

1. You will learn technical shooting skills and you will receive hands-on instruction about releasing the potential in the new PocketWizard TTL system. Damien will teach you his simple, easy-to-use repeatable exposure systems. You will feel liberated, inspired and motivated to get out there and shoot at the next level.

2. You will learn how to see potential in the environment whatever the weather. Damien will teach you how to 'see' pictures where you may think none exist and how to design a photograph. He will discuss composition, perspective, viewpoint, and impact throughout the day. He will also give you feedback on your images as you shoot, in order to help you evolve your shooting style.

Who should attend?

This workshop is ideal for all portrait photographers wishing to expand their creative abilities on location. Ideally you need to be able to understand the exposure process, the relationship between shutter speed, aperture and ISO.

Damien will be working with his camera in manual exposure mode most of the time because it is the easiest way of working. He'll teach you all you need to know about Speedlights so don't panic about them.

What you will have at the end of the day to take away:

1. Whatever the weather we will be producing portfolio grade images that you can use right away, on your website, in brochures or on your studio walls. The models we use are published professionals and will be patient with us.
2. You will have a new repertoire of images you can shoot and, above all, access to professional image making skills that have a high repeatable value. You will have the edge over your competition and you will feel renewed excitement for location shooting.

Testimonials:

ANTHONY SAID: Just a quick note to say I really enjoyed the course and got a lot out of it. I will certainly be looking at more courses in the future. If any of you out there are considering a course I would highly recommend Damiens – I have a stack of high quality shots for my portfolio as a result and the confidence to go and quickly get more shots that are going to be right in the camera straight away.

PAUL SAID: Great photos yet again and a real inspiration. Shooting f/16 & f/22 in bright light with a speedlight – I’m surprised you got a good exposure. I have always struggled in those scenarios with my Nikon SB800, even with fully charged batteries.

SCOTT SAID: Firstly thanks for a fantastic day and I know my photography lept forwards with the skills you demonstrated. Really interesting to see Marko’s post processing and how he’s brought the colours out. …Can’t wait to get on another course.

RICHIE SAID: As usual…. AWESOME!

IAN SAID: I am also still on a high from the Urban Shooting day and the follow-on with Marko. Still editing a number of my images from the day. It was great to meet you both and I am glad that you enjoyed it as much as I did.

ROGER SAID: The camera formula you [Damien] use is so good and should be in everybody’s mind when using flash.

RICHARD SAID: What a fantastic day Damien. I can’t thank you enough. Your enthusiasm for pictures is so addictive, cant wait to book another course. Anybody else reading this, I highly recommend this workshop it’s excellent.

NEIL SAID: I just want to add my thanks for a truly educational, inspiring and fabulous day of photography! So many great tips on finding shots in places you wouldn’t think possible.

CHRIS SAID: There are course's and there are COURSE'S, THIS WAS THE LATTER! If you are serious about fashion photography this day is for you. Damien burns for what he does, there´s a BUZZ about him and after being with him for 5 mins you're hooked too, Great! 100% SPOT ON.

KARL SAID: awesome as usual Damien.

PETE SAID: I do like the evocative image you can create with 1/30th. Lovely stuff and again, wonderful PP.

JAMES SAID: Thanks for a superb day. Great locations, fab model and not forgetting a pretty decent tutor! Look forward to seeing you on the 22nd.

RICH SAID: A quick note of thanks for yesterday’s outstanding workshop. I had high hopes for the day, and can honestly say that these were completely surpassed within the first session!!! Your generosity and enthusiasm (not to mention your endless patience) was fantastic, and incredibly inspirational. And of top of that, I’ve come away with a much improved technical understanding, and met a bunch of talented and like-minded photographers. I can’t think of anything I would have changed.

RORY SAID: What I find extremely valuable from my current status as ‘enthusiastic beginner’ is that, both Damien and Marko explain what they are going to do, show you how to do it, and then let you do it yourself. Their technique is not about showing off their own skills but allowing you to take time at your own speed and ability, together with relatively straight forward formula’s for taking this forward yourself when they are not around. It’s a bit like learning to fly a plane – all is well when the instructor is with you but taking your first solo flight is a different matter altogether. Luckily, Damien and Marko have ensured that I can take off and land safely! Thank you – much appreciated.

RADMILA SAID: I only can say 'VIELEN DANK!' (thank you very much!) for this outstanding day! I learned a lot, the pictures are simply brilliant and this won't be the last Workshop with Damien, I'll bet you!

SARAH SAID: I just really wish I could afford to do a workshop with you every week! Not only are you great company but you are so generous with your tips and advice. The atmosphere on the day was brilliant, the model was perfect and you were…. well….. YOU! ;o)
I owe you such alot and you continue to inspire me further each time I attend one of your sessions. Anyone looking to do this workshop – DO IT… it’ll be the best thing you’ve done. Thanks so much Damien – it was a day to remember for a very long time.

SEAN SAID: Great images as always – love the mix of natural and controlled lighting. See you next week!

FERGUS SAID: Another great set of images, as good as last year when I did the urban portraits day. Having just spent a day with Marko on photoshop maybe he deserves some recognition too. I learnt so much from him particularly about using lightroom. Many thanks Marko.

GWYN SAID: Damien, thanks very much for everything on this shoot! I thoroughly enjoyed myself and it was great to learn how to take these kinds of shots. Anybody else reading this post, I can very highly recommend this workshop!!! Damien’s enthusiasm will really get you fired up throughout the day! I can’t wait to do the next workshop…

GORDON SAID: Damien – fantastic day. A lot to take in but I got some brilliant shots with your help. I will definitely be coming on another course. Cheers!

LYN SAID: Great pictures Damien, as always! You are such an inspiration – gives all of us something to aim for in our work.
