Drobo - The Automated Data Storage Robot

Drobo - The Automated Data Storage Robot

Drobo (4-bay) & Drobo S (5-bay).

Super-fast data transfer speeds.
With FireWire 800 alongside USB 2.0 and an upgraded core processor, Drobo is the fastest product in its class. It is the perfect solution for both primary and backup storage of large media and productivity files such as video, photos, music, audio, and troves of documents and spreadsheets. In fact, even if you're now using USB 2.0, the new Drobo is up to three times as fast as its predecessor in typical usage.

Plug-in and use straight out the box.
Drobo was designed to meet a stringent design requirement: Anyone should be able to use Drobo regardless of technical experience.

No Software or Drivers are Needed.
The Drobo magic comes from the software that's built into the hardware called BeyondRAID - an advanced storage technology. Drobo does everything for you from expanding capacity when you add a drive, to self-healing around drive failures and data errors. Drobo also includes a powerful desktop software utility called Drobo Dashboard that shows you what Drobo is up to and adds important functionality including firmware updates, formatting options and email alerts.

A simple to use storage device with built-in intelligent software that will automatically protect your data from hard disk failures.

Drobo utilizes the revolutionary BeyondRAID storage technology that protects data against a hard disk crash, yet is simple enough for anyone to use. As long as you have more than a single disk in Drobo, all data on Drobo is safe no matter which hard disk fails. There’s no need to worry about anything else.

Incomparable expandability
Your library of data grows every moment. Now, your storage solution expands in seconds, too. Drobo holds up to four hard drives, can expand at any time and supports up to 16TB on a single volume as disk sizes increase. Choose how big you want your Drobo with any combination of drives capacities.

Consolidate Your Storage
Avoid the danger, mess, and hassle of multiple external storage "solutions" and upgrade to Drobo, with the world's only safe, expandable storage technology.

FAQs

What else do I need?

The Drobo is a fully automated piece of hardware that does not require any additional software and will automatically check for firmware upgrades. The only thing you will need is 1 or more standard 3.5" Serial ATA I or Serial ATA II hard drives.

SATA Hard drives are available here or search google for the latest prices as they fluctuate daily.

Can you access Drobo over a wireless network, and do I have to buy a DroboShare to make this work?

If you plug Drobo directly into one of your computers using a firewire 2 (800) lead, you can access the data from other computers in the usual way by logging in to the host computer over your network (You will need to enable file sharing on the host computer).  This is how we work with the Drobo we use for our client pictures connected to Marko's Mac Pro.  I can log in to Marko's computer from our kitchen using our wifi network for example and access the Drobo.  However, if Marko's computer is switched off, I can't access the Drobo.  We have a 2nd Drobo which is used for all backups and sits on a Drobo share, plugged into our gigabit network.  It is not connected to any computer directly and is left on 24/7. We use this for automated backups of all hard drives in all 7 computers in the office and home using the fabulous 'Time Machine' software. This too can be accessed via the WiFi network.
